Santa Ana season: what a windy week does to your paint

The dust is not the problem. What people do about the dust is the problem.

Santa Ana season runs from about now through to March, and every year it does the same thing to cars across the Valley. The wind drops the humidity into single figures, pushes down off the passes, and leaves a fine grey film on every panel of every car parked outside.

The film itself is not what wrecks paint. What people do about it is.

Why a dry wipe is the worst option

That dust is not soft. It is fine mineral grit, and under a microscope it has edges. Drag a towel, a duster or a sleeve across a panel covered in it and you are sanding the clear coat with the dirt you are trying to remove. That is where most of the swirl marks on cars in Chatsworth, Porter Ranch and Simi Valley come from, and they show up worst on dark paint in direct sun.

A waterless wash spray is better than a dry towel, but only if the car is lightly dusted. On a car that has sat through three days of wind, there is too much grit for the lubricant to carry safely.

The foam is not for show. It floats the grit off the paint before anything touches it.

What actually works

The answer is to never touch the paint until the grit is already off it. That is exactly what a contactless pre wash does and why it is the first step in every one of our exterior packages: the car gets rinsed and foamed, the foam lifts and carries the dust down off the panels, and only then does a wash mitt go near it.

If you are doing it at home between details, the same principle holds. Rinse first, properly, top to bottom. Then two buckets, one with soap and one with clean water to rinse the mitt in, so you are not putting the grit you just picked up straight back onto the next panel.

The other half of a Santa Ana week

  • Humidity in single figures. Dry air pulls moisture out of leather, vinyl and dashboards. It is the fastest way to crack a dash, and it is why conditioner on the seats matters more in October than it does in June.
  • Everything dries instantly. Wash water, soap and spray wax all flash off on a hot panel in that air, which is how you end up with streaks and water spots worse than the dust was. Work in shade, work in sections, or book a morning slot.
  • Static and fine dust inside. The dust gets in through the vents and sits on every interior surface. A blowout and vacuum does more for the cabin after a windy week than any amount of wiping.

When to actually book something

Through Santa Ana season the useful rhythm is a proper wash more often than usual, and one clay bar and sealant at the end of it. The clay pulls out the grit that has bonded into the clear coat over months of wind, and the sealant gives the next few months of dust something slicker to sit on.

If the paint already feels like fine sandpaper when you run a hand over the roof, that is the bonded stuff and a wash will not shift it. Here is what the clay bar actually does.
